Omron HBF-306C Fat Loss Monitor Black

bad reviewers: knowledge is power!5

I never buy anything without doing research on what to buy first. If you read about BMI analyzers on About.com it not only recommends this as one of their top 3 picks over ANY kind of body fat analyzer but it also explains why some people didnt get the results expected on these comments...because of user error.

Most admit to using this first thing in the morning.

It says on about.com never to do that. For accurate readings use 3 hours after a meal never first thing in the morning (you are dehydrated then) never use when dehydrated but you should use after emptying your bladder. (remember it's guaging what percent of you is muscle vs water so you want your body water to be balanced and normal...not too low with dehydration not too high with a full bladder.) Also it's best to use this or any monitor when unclothed if possible. Ive found that part not to matter that much as everyone at my office borrows this sometimes and because bare workers would be awkward we've found it to read accurately clothed. :-)

Also if you have a very high muscle mass and a very low BMI set it on "athlete" for an accurate reading. So yes even bodybuilders CAN use it...you just have to know how.

This explained those who had problems and the unbiased rating on the aformentioned website (and others) states that this is WAY more accurate than calipers...made me buy it. I"d used it before at the gym and it was always great. But before I purchase on my own I learn.

I use mine often and it is right on target as to what's going on with my body. A handheld non-electronic (or even electronic if it's the kind you place ON your fat) caliper will vary if you do not measure the EXACTLY in the same place each time and squeeze to the exact resistance. You avoid that common error via this latest technology. This has the latest.

I bought this one because or reading about what technology works the best from consumer tests by the experts. And I am happy with my purchase.

As an aside I also discovered the scales that do fat testing through your feet are not as accurate as this method of testing either even the Omron scale didnt test for accuracy as well as this Omron fat tester.

So I thought I'd share what i found in my week of research prior to purchase.

I love this body fat analyzer and my friends who have used it got their own as well. If you are bloated your scale can't tell you why your weight is up. This can. And some days I thank it for that!More detail ...

Omron HBF-510W Full Body Composition Monitor with Scale

Good Price for Body Composition5

I was very happy to find a scale that did a full body composition at a price lower than $80. So far after about 5 uses the accuracy seems right on. Each trial returns similar results and matches very close to the scale I use at the gym I go to. It doesn't have a memory option to store previous test results but I have planned on recording my own results in a spreadsheet anyway so that is not a big loss for me.More detail ...

Omron Full Body Sensor Body Fat and Body Composition Monitor

Excellent purchase & Scale5

I was extremely hesitant in buying a new scale despite dissatisfaction with my old scale which had a tendency to fluctuate erratically. I also wanted more than just a cheap scale that only told me my weight but NOTHING about what was going on in my body. After shopping comparing features and reading literally hundreds of reviews I finally settled on the Omron brand but I wasn't sure which model to get. Finally I chose the 500 model and Amazon informed me that the 500 had been replaced with a newer model the 510. Unfortunately the 510 no longer had the same features as the 500 (they got rid of the Body age & Resting metabolism features along with the 1 7 30 90 day memory that the 500 had). Luckily the web page for the 510 showed a better new model this HBF-514C which had ALL the original features of the 500 and boasted "NEW - Advanced Accuracy" on the box. The main reason I chose the 514 model was for the extensive features and the excellent quality behind the Omron name. They are noted for their accuracy NON-fluctuation when done consistently and long lasting scales. I figured that with the amount of money as I was about to spend on any one of these scales I should get the one with the features and the newer model upgrade.

Out of the box I noticed how lightweight the scale was and yet it felt VERY solid and well built. Attractive. Well boxed and it comes with batteries manual registration card and a worksheet for logging results that they say you are allowed to reprint as needed. The worksheet is clean and very easy to use with tons of room for many weigh-ins to come.

I then sat down and did what many reviewers said to do I read the manual from cover to cover. Then I braved the programming for myself which went quickly and was very easy to do (reading the manual before doing it REALLY made it easy.) Then I weighed. The results were exactly as expected no surprise in my weight. The other results were realistic and informative. I mainly got this for the weight general body fat % and most importantly the Skeletal Muscle % as I am attempting to lose extra weight while building my body to be strong and lean. More muscle more calories burned so that is very important to me (I am 34 and active but stress has left me less than happy with my body composition) BMI is close to other results. Body fat % seems realistic as does the skeleton muscle %. The Resting metabolism and body age is neat but I don't know how helpful it really is. Knowing your Resting metabolism rate gives you a base amount of calories you should eat daily so it may be helpful to some although it is probably just a start and needing to be fiddled with to see what caloric level YOU need daily for your goals.

The scale gave consistent results for the 3 people in my family without fail repeatedly. The most accurate (read: Consistent) scale I've had the pleasure to use. I follow the rules outlined in the manual to get consistent results and it works. The scale and hand held sensors are easy to use and very fast to get results. Having it store my results for up to 90 days is a great feature although I also log my results in my excel sheet (I like making pretty graphs showing trend lines and how far I've come) and also on the fridge with the reprinted worksheet included. Gives me motivation to see my progress when tempted late at night.

HIGHLY recommended and worth every penny!

Pros:

* Full body composition (7 areas tested)

* Can also be JUST a scale. Nice! Scale weight is consistent every time.

* Accurate in that it is consistent without weird fluctuations.

* Easy to set up and use if you read the manual to get acquainted with your new scale first.

* Lightweight and attractive to see lying around.

* Good value for features.

* Well written manual that is actually helpful.

* Included worksheet that you can legally reprint. Nice worksheet design for easy use.

* Free batteries so that you can use it immediately.

* Sold by Amazon so I got free shipping. (and with the promotion going on right now I saved an additional $10 at checkout. Details on the item page: [b]Save an extra $10 instantly when you spend $49 or more on select Omron products offered by Amazon.com. The discount will be reflected in your cart at checkout. Cons:

None really so far. However to many people the price is a bit high esp. when you are worried about whether it will live up to the hype when you could get a cheaper scale for $60-89 with less features (or an older model like the 500 with the same features from a 3rd party seller on amazon) Honestly I do believe that this was the best scale for me at a price that I could afford. I debated a cheaper Omron model but at the end I knew that this one was the way to go for my needs. Shop around I do however recommend this scale and I am very happy to date.

Taylor 5596G Body fat-Body Water Scale with Bone and Muscle Mass Features

Finally! A great accurate scale at a great price!5

I had tried several scales before I got my hands on the Taylor 5596G. This scale tells your weight body fat body water bone mineral muscle mass - and is less than half as much as a competitor! I am just SO impressed with this scale.

First the basics. This scale is very simple to set up and use. For the first two memory spots it's even one-touch operation - just hit the toggle up for person 1 down for person 2. Then you stand on the scale it sends a mild electrical signal through your feet (you can't feel it) and voila! All your stats are shown.

If you haven't used a scale like this before you really should give it a try. These types of electrical scales are very popular now and work very well. If you're not sure how they work drop me a line and I can explain it in detail. Suffice it to say in this review that yes they DO work based on your body's conductiveness.

So OK taking it as a given that the technology should work well does it work well here? I am happy to answer that with a resounding YES. The reason I got this scale is that my previous purchase - a competitor's scale at a much higher price - did NOT work accurately. It gave fat percentage numbers which were wildly off. It made me worry that a scale didn't exist that provided fat numbers with water and muscle mass numbers. However my fears were assuaged with this purpose.

I compared the fat numbers of this machine with the five other fat testing devices we have here. This Taylor scale was right on. In test after test it came up with the exact same numbers as the other devices. I am very satisfied with it.

As far as weight goes pretty much all scales are good at that at this point :) I can put my 3 scales side by side and they all come up with the same numbers within a pound. So that part is fine.

My tests with the other values - water muscle mass etc - also show that this scale is accurate.

It really is so important to have a scale that shows you your fat and water percentages. Let's say you are 150 pounds and little of that is fat. You could be in super shape. Let's say you are 150 pounds and 99% of that is fat - you could be in awful shape! Your weight alone tells you very little. You need to know how much of that is excess fat and how much is healthy muscle.

Water is critical because your body needs to be properly hydrated to work properly. Most people do not drink nearly enough water in a given day. If your body dries out you get sick more frequently it's harder to lose weight and harder just to have energy to do things. You need to keep track of your body hydration levels.

I also am really happy that this scale has a muscle mass indicator. Whether you are walking steps biking hiking or anything else building lean muscle is an important part of staying healthy. This isn't so you look like Conan!! It is so your body is limber enough to climb stairs safely to maintain your balance without falling and breaking bones. Every human needs muscle to be healthy. This scale helps you keep track of yours.

Are there downsides to this scale? Well the "indicators" of what you are being shown are rather small. It flashes the numbers one after another. So it's not that you look at the readout and see all at once the weight water % fat % etc. It cycles through them. But the indicator of what number means what is very tiny so really you have to remember that fat comes first water comes next and so on. Yes it's easy to learn after a few tries but it's annoying that the indicators are so tiny.

Also it cycles around three times and then vanishes. With most of my other scales you stand on it and the numbers show until you get off. That gives you time to write them down. here you have to write really quickly - because if you miss something after that third try you're out of luck. That seems to be a bit frustrating and nonsensical to me.

But still this is by far the best scale I've found - that gives me exactly what I want to know with accurate numbers and it's cheaper than others in the same category! What more could I want in life!More detail ...

AccuMeasure MyoTape MT05 and AM-3000 Fitness 3000 Personal Body Fat Tester Kit

Simple Accurate Inexpensive Body Fat Measurement5

This is the 3rd body fat testing device I have purchased. The other two: Omron HBF-400 Body Fat Monitor and Scale and FatTrack Gold Digital Body Fat Caliper - 1 pc(AccuFitness) have been used for some time and I wanted to add this manual one to see if perhaps digital at least in this case is not the way to go. I've kept records of my digital readings and when I took my measurements at the same time as the others with the Accu-Measure manual calipers I found that the manual reading was 2% less than the digital ones. I retook all the measurements 3x's and came up with the same results.

What does this mean? For me it means I'm going to go with this one. While seeing the digital readings is very cool (sometimes disappointing but cool...) I'm not convinced they are the most accurate. Then again if I'm losing another 2% when I use the manual calipers... why wouldn't I want to use this one?!

In this package you get the calipers and a MyoTape tape measure which allows you to lock the tape measure in place for more accurate readings. Very easy to use and read. You also get a 5x7 card with two body fat % measurement charts (one for men and one for women) measurement tips and an explanation of how to use the calipers with step-by-step directions.

NOTE: it is recommended by the makers of this product that if you are obese you should not take skinfold measurements. They suggest using the tape measure instead. The one included in this package goes up to 60".

Overall I think this is a good buy. Easy to use accurate inexpensive and a device that I will use for years to come.More detail ...

Omron HBF-306C Fat Loss Monitor Black

Great Overall Gauge At A Good Price5

I highly recommend the Omron fat loss monitor for anybody who is serious about monitoring their body fat.

Why I Recommend It:

1.
EASY to use. It's almost dummy-proof

2.
Inexpensive. For less than $26 you can have it delivered (Super-Saver shipping) including batteries.

3.
I don't need help to use it. I don't know of any other method that you can do in the privacy of your home each and every day with the exception of calipers. And you need somebody else to use the calipers on you. Since they're only accurate if that person knows what he/she is doing and measures you in the exact same place each time I think it's just easy to get a monitor.

4.
Quick. I can take a measurement in about 10 seconds.

General Thoughts/Suggestions:

1.
The instruction manual mentions this also but... Make sure to take the measurement at the same time each day. I take my measurements right before I leave the house for work before I've eaten or drank anything for the day.

2.
Don't expect the results to be perfect. If the measurement tells you that you're 16% body fat that's probably pretty close to what you actually are. But depending on how much water you've had to drink how recently you've exercised how recently you've eaten etc. the reading could go up to 17% or down to 15%. It's best to be consistent with when you take your measurements and to use the monitor as a guide to tell you if you're gaining or losing. I think of it as a fat loss compass... not a fat loss GPS.

3.
Make sure that you keep your stats updated in the computer memory. I'm on a fat loss routine right now. I've lost 15 lbs since I began using the Omron monitor. It only takes a second to update your personal stats in the monitor's memory. But you need to do it. Otherwise it'll give you an inaccurate reading.

All in all I'd say this is a great investment. Yes you can lose body fat without using a monitor. But it is also possible to lose weight without losing body fat (i.e. water weight or muscle). I'm constantly tweaking my diet and workout routine to keep that percentage dropping. Without the monitor I'd be in the dark and I'm confident that I wouldn't have seen the progress that I've seen thus far.

Good luck & good health!
